I texted Hamish on Sunday he replied within minutes, and by Monday lunchtime the job was completed. A calm, friendly, professional, efficient service I would definitely use Hamish again and recommend him to friends.

I was getting pretty desperate for help with a leak, I rang another plumber and he recommended Hamish, so contacted him and he offered to help. He sorted out my leaking toilet.....his speciality! AND fixed a tap that wasn't functioning. Hamish was very professional and saved the day.

Quotes

Please note that I provide a very specific type of plumbing service and operate slightly differently to many other plumbers. I often hear it said, “You can’t find a plumber to do the small jobs”, or “You can’t find a plumber when you need one”. I try to fill these two needs for small jobs and availability without too long a wait. I achieve this in two ways:

1) Small jobs
These are only profitable if I can cut out the time-overhead associated with quoting. Consequently, instead of offering a quoting service, I choose to publish my hourly rate (see my pricing page), and I charge accordingly for my time. Also on my pricing page, I give detailed guidance for each of my plumbing services so you have an idea how long a particular job is likely to take. So for most small plumbing jobs, I turn up with my tool box in hand and an expectation of fixing the problem there and then. I keep my van well stocked with common plumbing parts so that, more often than not, I have the parts I need without having to order anything or to run off to the plumbing merchants. But if specific parts do need to be ordered, I will always discuss their cost with you before proceeding. At the end of the job I will ask for your email address, and that evening I will send you my invoice, detailing my labour charge based on time taken, and a breakdown of parts used. You will see from my reviews page that this approach seems to work well. Many of my customers comment on the efficiency with which I work and the reasonableness of my pricing. I provide an efficient plumbing service but not an efficient quoting service.

2) Availability
I always publish my next availability near the top of my home page, and update this daily from an app on my phone. Most of the time, you will find me available for a small job within the next one or two working days. In order to keep my schedule open like this for small jobs, I have to deliberately avoid taking on the bigger jobs that would otherwise fill up my schedule. Since the bigger jobs tend to require quotes, the easiest way for me to avoid them is to not offer a quoting service.

EXCEPTIONS

Inspection visits
There are some types of plumbing problems where an obligation-free inspection visit is helpful to determine what is causing the problem and the best way of solving it. For example, if a damp patch has appeared on your kitchen ceiling and it appears that your shower is leaking, it might be that the silicon just needs replacing around your bath or shower tray. In that case, if I have the time and you are happy for me to proceed, I might sort it there and then. But if the leak is caused by cracks in the grouting and it is apparent that some retiling is in order, the repair will take considerably longer, typically about 10 hours of work spread over several visits. You might need some time to think about that before agreeing for me to proceed, and I would totally understand that. Similarly, for a job requiring expensive replacement parts, I am happy to discuss options and prices without any obligation on your part.

Feasibility visits
It might be that you want to install a dishwasher, for example, but you are not sure whether it is feasible or not in the available space. I don't mind making a quick obligation-free visit to inspect and advise.

I make inspection visits and feasibility visits on the assumption that you are happy in principle with my hourly rate, and that it is your intention to give me the work.

Quotes
There are occasions when I quote for work, but they are the exception, not the norm. Generally speaking if you ask me for a quote, I assume you still haven't made up your mind whether you want me or not, and that price is the main determining factor. If that assumption is correct, it makes no sense for me to schedule time to provide you with a free quote when I could instead use that same time to actually do a plumbing job and earn something. Consequently, people who are happy to call me out on my hourly-rate-plus-parts basis are always my priority. Those who ask me for quotes get the crumbs and leftovers of my time. If I can stop by at my convenience when I am passing nearby I will do so.

If you do want a quote, please:
1) Call me on 07442 022493 so that I can discuss with you what you need.
2) If I don't pick up, leave me a voicemail so I can call you back. Describe what you need, and tell me your postcode so I know roughly where you are.
3) If you can text or email me any relevant photos, that is also helpful.

If you message or email me requesting a quote but omit to tell me your phone number I will probably just message you back asking you to check my pricing page.
